The hours and shifts for a chef depends on the opening hours of the restaurant. Most restaurants are open during weekends and evenings. Chefs normally start their shifts before the restaurant opens, in order to prepare for food service. The kitchen itself usually closes before the restaurant closes, which means chefs usually leave work before the final guests have left. In many restaurants, staff is on a weekly rota and can change shifts, giving them flexible hours.
There is usually no academic qualification or certification necessary to work as a chef, but some chefs choose to earn certificates in various areas. If you have no professional chef experience, you may start your career as a trainee chef.
In order to be successful working as a chef, you will need to have a keen interest in food and cooking, and be able to do several tasks at once. You also need need to work well under pressure and be a team player. You will benefit from staying up-to-date on the latest food trends, and you’ll be able to show off your creative side by presenting dishes in imaginative ways.
